Kathmandu Valley is made up of three historically and culturally important cities: Kathmandu, Patan (Lalitpur), and Bhaktapur. Together, they form the cultural and economic heart of Nepal.
Kathmandu
- Kathmandu is the capital and largest urban city of Nepal.
- It lies in the Kathmandu Valley at an altitude of about 1,400 meters and is surrounded by the mountains Shivapuri, Phulchowki, Nagarjun, and Chandragiri.
- It is the main center for tourism, business, and government administration in Nepal.
- The city has a history of around 2000 years.
- The major religions are Hinduism and Buddhism, and the city has a diverse cultural background.
- Nepali is the main language, though many also speak Newari (Nepal Bhasa).
Patan (Lalitpur)
- Patan is located 5 km southeast of Kathmandu.
- It is known as the “City of Artisans” because of its skilled craftsmen and traditional artwork.
- The city is famous for its ancient temples, monasteries, narrow streets, and brick houses.
- Patan reflects a strong blend of Hindu and Buddhist traditions.
Bhaktapur
- Bhaktapur lies at an altitude of 1,401 meters.
- It is known as the “City of Devotees/Followers.”
- It is a major tourist destination famous for its ancient architecture, pottery, sculpture, and traditional squares.
